This is an Example of a Title Tag
Here is an example of what a snippet looks like in Google's SERPs. The meta title and meta description are shown here.
Check your search snippet before it goes live
You can spend an hour on a meta title and description and still not know how they'll look on Google until the page is indexed. By then, a title that stops before its main point or a description that trails off is already in front of searchers.
A SERP simulator is a tool that shows how your page's title, URL, and meta description will appear on Google's results page before the page goes live. It takes the guesswork out of writing them so that you get your metadata to appear how you intended it to be.
Contentpen's free SERP simulator builds that Google snippet preview on desktop or mobile and lets you add sample versions of the features that fill real results pages.
What you can add to your SERP preview
Switch these on to see how your snippet holds up on a busy results page.
AI Overview
This option adds a sample answer box above the regular results, the way Google shows one for many searches. It shows how far down your listing sits when AI Overviews take the top of the page.
Ads
The tool can place sample sponsored results above the organic listings for a target phrase. On transactional keywords, it shows how far ads can push your listing down, which is useful context when you weigh organic and paid traffic for a keyword.
Map pack
This option adds the local map and business listings that appear for searches like "dentist near me".
Rating stars
By clicking on the ratings checkbox, you can see review stars under your meta title for a keyword. In real results, Google shows stars only on pages that have review schema markup. The preview lets you see how your listing would look with a rating before you add the markup.
Date
The SERP simulator can add a publish date at the start of your description, as Google often does for articles. The date uses up some of the meta description's space, so check that your key points still fit in the results.
Heatmap
With this box checked, the results page is shaded from warm to cool based on where searchers tend to look and click. Use it to see whether your listing sits in a high-attention spot or not.
Set up your SERP preview
Fill in the given fields to get the SERP preview in real time.
Step 1. Add your URL
Paste the page address, such as https://yoursite.com/blog/post-name. This can also be your homepage, landing page, or any blog or service page. Click ‘Fetch data’ to pull the title and description from a live page into the fields.
Step 2. Enter your site name
This is the name Google shows above your URL, like your brand or company name.
Step 3. Write or paste your title
Type the meta title you want to test, and the title tag preview updates in the listing. Use Capitalize title if you prefer title case.
Step 4. Add your meta description
Paste the description you plan to publish to see it in the meta description preview, or let our tool fetch it for you.
Step 5. Search your keyword and pick a view
Type the search you want to rank for, choose desktop or mobile view, set the country, and list your bold keywords to see which words stand out in the snippet.
Share or reuse your preview
Once your snippet looks right, you can:
- Save as image to drop the preview into a report or slide deck
- Copy HTML to get the title and meta description tags ready for your page code
- Share a link so a teammate or client can open the same preview
- Reset to clear every field and start on the next page
Publishing through Contentpen instead? Its content publisher, built into the SEO AEO tool, sends the meta title and meta description along with each article, so there are no tags to paste manually.
Reading the title tag preview and length counters
Google doesn't cut titles and descriptions at a fixed number of characters. It trims them to fit the space on the screen, which is why this SERP preview tool measures both the character count and the pixel width of your text.
Pixel width tells you more than characters alone. Capital letters and wide letters take up more room, so two titles with the same character count can end at different points.
When your text runs past the available space, the counters show it, and the preview trims the text where Google likely would.
As a mobile SERP simulator, it also shows when the same wording fits on desktop but gets trimmed on mobile, so switch views before you settle on a final version.
Who relies on a SERP preview tool
Here's how different teams use this snippet preview tool:
- Content writers: Test a few meta title and description options before the draft goes to an editor.
- Freelance SEO professionals: Use it as a SERP snippet generator for client mockups, so clients approve the snippet before launch. It helps freelancers avoid constant back-and-forth of edits after a page is live.
- Web developers: Run a quick meta tag preview while building page templates, so long titles get caught before release.
- Ecommerce managers: See how a product page looks next to ads and rating stars on buying searches.
- Local business owners: Check whether a service page still gets noticed when the map pack sits above it.
Put your snippet in real search context
Two settings in this free Google SERP simulator place your snippet next to the results it would compete with.
Your snippet next to real competitors
Search the keyword you want to rank for, and the SERP simulator places your listing among the current results for it. To see what those top pages cover, use Contentpen's SERP and gap analysis tool.
Results for the country you target

Answers about Google snippet previews
Quick answers about previewing search results and using this tool.
Does the SERP simulator cost anything?
No. The SERP simulator is free, needs no account, and lets you build as many previews as you want, for your own pages or for your clients.
Can I preview a page that isn't published yet?
Yes. In that case, you’ll have to type the meta title and description into the fields yourself. The ‘Fetch data’ option only works for live pages, but everything else in the preview works for drafts too.
How many characters of a title and description does Google show?
There's no official limit. In practice, Google typically shows about 40 to 60 characters of a meta title and 140 to 160 characters of a meta description. To check a live page against these ranges, use our free meta title checker and meta description checker.
Why does my live result look different from the preview?
Because Google can rewrite titles and descriptions for the live SERP. It may pull other text from your page when it thinks that text describes the page better for a specific search. The preview shows what you wrote, so it's the clearest view of the version you control.
Does Google bold my keywords in search results?
Often, yes. Google bolds words in the snippet that match the search, and sometimes close variations of them. The bold keywords field lets you see how that might look, though the real bolding depends on what each person searches.
Is a SERP simulator the same as a SERP checker?
No. A SERP checker tracks where a page ranks for a keyword. A SERP simulator shows what your listing will look like regardless of its ranking. Our tool helps you improve the meta title and description of a page before Google displays it to real searchers.
Do I need a SERP simulator Chrome extension?
No. Contentpen's SERP simulator doesn’t require any extension to work. It runs online on any browser, so there's nothing to add or install to your device.
Does the AI Overview option show whether Google cites my page?
No. It adds a sample box so you can see the layout. To find out whether AI answers actually cite your brand, Contentpen's AI visibility tool asks 7 AI engines, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude, the questions your buyers ask. It shows which sources they cite and where rivals get cited instead of you. Try it free for 7 days.
